Job Description

The Center for Marine Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the field of coastal uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) and satellite remote sensing research. Two years of grant funding are available in support of two related initiatives. The successful applicant will play a leading role in the establishment and start-up of a Coastal UAS Observatory and the analysis of coastal satellite remote sensing data from the SeaHawkHawkEye mission.

The postdoctoral researcher will become the primary coordinator of the UAS observatory and field operator/analyst of UAS equipment (two drones, several drone-mounted and in-situ sensors) recently procured via an NSF grant, for which we estimate 60 days of field time per year. They will also lead ocean color data analysis in the newly funded phase of the SeaHawkHawkEye satellite project, seeking to integrate in-situ, UAS, and satellite datasets across these two projects.

The postdoctoral scholar will gain important research experience in the operation and analysis of cutting-edge remote sensing technologies and will receive mentorship in scholarly and project managementrelated activities. Furthermore, the project teams are committed to collaborating with the postdoctoral researcher in a wide array of research initiatives, thus providing broad exposure to diverse scientific pursuits and opportunities to grow a sizable research network.

There will be opportunities to mentor undergraduate and graduate students, collaborate with faculty at community events, and contribute to teaching.
