At the core of our teaching remains our students, and their experience with us sets a foundation for success far beyond graduation. Not only do we have one of the largest PhD enrolments in Australia, but we have also made a commitment to making education opportunities available for all Queenslanders, regardless of personal, financial, or geographical barriers.

About the Food and Beverage Accelerator

The University of Queensland's Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) is a $160 million initiative aimed at boosting growth and innovation in the food and beverage manufacturing sector, with a goal of doubling the value of Australia's food and beverage manufacturing sector by 2030. The initiative is funded by a $50 million Trailblazer grant from the Australian Government and $110 million from industry and innovation partners, including QUT and UniSQ, and will provide manufacturers access to research teams, pilot facilities, and state-of-the-art equipment. Investment will be distributed across Queensland, including in Toowoomba, Mackay, Cairns, and Brisbane.

About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to focus their efforts on developing their expertise and emerging research profile in the discipline of food microbiology. The candidate will join the School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability (AGFS) and collaborate closely with researchers in the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) and other divisions within UQ, as well other universities in FaBA. We are seeking a driven, creative, and inventive researcher to join our team in the Innovative Ingredients program to harness the potential of food bacteria (lactic acid bacteria) to produce new ingredients and foods which have enhanced textures and flavours. Lactic acid bacteria have a long history of use in many fermented foods and are also present naturally in the environment. This project will explore this natural diversity to identify new strains with beneficial food modifying properties. The role will build on existing research activity in this area and will have scope to develop new avenues of research that are aligned with the Innovative Ingredients program in FaBA. At this level it is expected that the incumbent will contribute to service and engagement roles and activities.

Key responsibilities will include:

Produces quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets.

Work with colleagues in FaBA and the food industry in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.

Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users (e.g., the food industry) through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.

Develop a coherent research program and an emerging research profile.

Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours, coursework Masters research projects and Higher Degree by Research students.

Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ's Criteria for Academic Performance.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 2 years at Academic Level A, commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience.

At Academic Level A, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $74,308.68 to $99,426.59 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $86,941.16 to $116,329.11 per annum.
