Post-Doctoral Researcher, APC Microbiome Ireland

University College Cork

Post-Doctoral Researcher, APC Microbiome Ireland

12 Months, Fixed-term, Whole-time Post

Position Summary

APC Microbiome Ireland (formerly Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre) was formed in 2003 with funding from Science Foundation Ireland and in conjunction with key industry partners, it represents a seamless collaboration between UCC, Teagasc and MTU. It is widely recognised that the gut microbiota plays an important role in human health and has become one of the most dynamic, complex and exciting areas of research in both food and pharmaceutical arenas. Over the last two decades APC Microbiome Ireland has established itself as one of the leading global centres in gut microbiota research. APC Microbiome Ireland has made several landmark discoveries and has published over 3,500 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, generating many journal covers and associated editorials. APC Microbiome Ireland collaborates with over 20 industry partners and employs over 300 individuals, from the scientific PI's funded by the partner Institutions, the management team, and a dedicated group of research scientists, research assistants and postgraduate students.

We are recruiting a Post-Doctoral Researcher for a research project focused on understanding the role of the microbiome in a rodent model of empathy. We are particularly interested in understanding the neurocircuitry underlying the social transmission of behaviours and how the gut microbes can shape this. The successful candidate will be part of the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis team in the APC Microbiome Institute, which addresses the communication between the brain and the gut, and how it can be influenced by gastrointestinal microbiota. We use state of the art neurobiological techniques to relate changes in behavioural phenotype, as a consequence of gastrointestinal microbiota intervention strategies, with changes in immune, stress, neuroendocrine and neurotransmitter systems (see Cryan and Dinan, Nat Rev Neuro 2012; Borre et al., Trends Mol Med 2014).

UCC is an accredited research organisation and as such can form hosting agreements with third country nationals (and non-EEA nationals) for the purpose of conducting research in the University.

Essential Qualifications/Experience:

PhD and a strong publication record in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. Neuroscience, Physiology, Pharmacology; Biopsychology).

Significant experience with behavioural neuroscience techniques in rodents.

A proven ability to perform and publish scientific research independently.

A track record of attaining independent research funding.

Experience with rodent Stereotaxic surgery, Chemogenetics/Optogenetics, DNA/RNA isolation, 16S rRNA analysis, ELISA, Quantitative real-time PCR, and Immunohistochemistry, Fluorescence Microscopy would also be an advantage

Project Title: Understanding the Role of the Brain-Gut-Microbiome Axis in a Rodent Model of Empathy: from neurocircuitry to behaviour

Post Duration: 12 Months

Salary: 欧元42,781 - 欧元49,177 p.a. (IUA PD1 Salary Scale)
