Job Description

We are currently seeking highly motivated and talented individuals to fill four postdoctoral positions in the laboratory of Dr. Javier Gordon Ogembo at City of Hope's Department of Immuno-Oncology. The positions are available in the following areas (check requirements for each area at the bottom):

1. Gamma-herpesvirus vaccine development

2. Gamma-herpesvirus T cell immunology and therapeutics

3. Gamma-herpesvirus protein and antibody structural studies

4. Use of preclinical animal models to assess gamma-herpesvirus entry mechanism and vaccine development.

Our lab is part of the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope, a world-renowned National Comprehensive Cancer Center located just 20 miles from Los Angeles. City of Hope provides access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources excellent for transitional science, as well as a vibrant and collaborative research community. The Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope has several facilities that are approved by the FDA for the production of investigational drugs and biologics for use in clinical trials. These facilities are designed to meet rigorous regulatory standards and ensure the safety and efficacy of products developed at City of Hope. As a postdoctoral fellow in our lab, you will have the opportunity to access these facilities and work alongside leading experts in the field, contributing to cutting-edge research projects aimed at advancing our understanding the mechanisms of viral entry, oncovirology, vaccinology, and studying the interactions between viruses and host cells. You will also be able to participate and learn with our expert collaborators in our partner institutes as a visiting scientist: for vaccine and antibody design studies, you will have the opportunity to work at the Albert Einstein Medical Center under Dr. Jonathan Lai, while for structural protein studies involving X-Ray crystallography and Cryo-EM you will have the opportunity to work at the University of Southern California under Dr. Xiaojian Chen. Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

Ideal candidates should have a Ph.D., Ph.D/DVM, or MD/Ph.D degree(s) in a related field and a strong background in one or more of the following areas: virology, protein/antibody biochemistry and structure, cancer vaccines, T-cell immunology, and the use of animal models in preclinical studies. Experience and proficiency in the following techniques are required for each position:

Gamma-herpesvirus vaccine development:

・ Cell culture and aseptic technique: culture, handling, and maintenance of bacterial and mammalian cells (multiple cell lines), cryopreservation.

・ Immuno-assays: western blot, ELISA, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence assay, immuno-histochemistry.

・ Virology assays: virus production and titration, virus neutralization, plaque assays.

・ DNA/RNA assays: DNA/RNA isolation from cells, viruses, and tissue, conventional PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, single cell RNA analysis (not excluding).

・ Experience with developing, handling and characterizing mRNA/DNA, virus-like particles, viral vector, nanoparticles vaccine candidates and lipid nanoparticles formulation is a plus.

・ Pre-clinical animal models: animal handling (mice and/or rats), immunization/challenge, bodily fluid/blood collection, tissue processing.

Gamma-herpesvirus T cell immunology and therapeutics:

・ Cell culture and aseptic technique: culture, handling, and maintenance of bacterial and mammalian cells (multiple cell lines), cryopreservation.

・ Immune cell assays: immune cell isolation (animal tissue, PBMCs), ex vivo T cell stimulation and proliferation assays, cell viability and metabolic activity assays, ELISPOT, cell migration assays, phagocytosis assays, multi-color flow cytometry immune panel analysis, and cytotoxicity assays.

・ Virology assays: virus production and titration, virus neutralization, plaque assays (not excluding).

・ Immuno-assays: western blot, ELISA, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence assay, immuno-histochemistry.

・ DNA/RNA assays: DNA/RNA isolation from cells, viruses, and tissue, conventional PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, single cell RNA analysis.

・ Pre-clinical animal models: animal handling (mice and/or rats), immunization/challenge, bodily fluid/blood collection, tissue processing.

Gamma-herpesvirus protein and antibody structural studies

・ Cell culture and aseptic technique: culture, handling, and maintenance of bacterial and mammalian cells (multiple cell lines), cryopreservation.

・ Protein assays: protein production and purification, crystal structure, cryo-electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, surface plasmon resonance.

・ Immuno-assays: western blot, ELISA, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence assay, immuno-histochemistry (not excluding).

・ DNA/RNA assays: DNA/RNA isolation from cells, viruses, and tissue, conventional PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, single cell RNA analysis (not excluding).

Use of preclinical animal models to assess gamma-herpesvirus entry mechanism and vaccine development.

・ Cell culture and aseptic technique: culture, handling, and maintenance of bacterial and mammalian cells (multiple cell lines), cryopreservation.

・ Virology assays: virus production and titration, virus neutralization, plaque assays.

・ Immuno-assays: western blot, ELISA, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence assay, immuno-histochemistry.

・ DNA/RNA assays: DNA isolation from cells, viruses, and tissue, conventional PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, single cell RNA analysis.

・ Pre-clinical animal models: animal handling (mice and/or rats), immunization, blood collection, tissue processing. Previous experience working with samples from non-human primates is an advantage.

In addition, candidates should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills, a track record of scientific productivity manifested in at least 2-3 first author publications in peer-reviewed journals, and the ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team. Previous experience working in a GLP/cGMP- compliant laboratory settings will be an added advantage.
