Postdoctoral Research Associate in Evolutionary Epigenetics

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the lab of Prof Peter Sarkies to study the contribution that epigenetic changes (“epimutations”) could make to evolutionary processes. The lab has previously shown that epimutations, mediated by changes in small RNAs (Beltran et al., Nature Ecology and Evolution, 2020) and chromatin accessibility (Wilson et al., in preparation) arise in populations of the nematode worm C. elegans and contribute to divergence in gene expression. However, the epimutations have limited stability, typically lasting for 2-4 generations on average. A key question remaining however is how epimutations respond to the environment. In this project, the successful candidate will investigate whether genotoxic stress affects the rate, spectrum and stability of epimutations. The model system C. elegans will be used to generate multiple independent populations, and epimutations will be followed using a variety of high-throughput sequencing based methods. By comparing epimutations between populations exposed to genotoxic stresses and control populations, we will be able to investigate whether epimutations respond to environmental pressures, thereby investigating the potential consequences for evolutionary processes.

Applicants should possess a PhD/DPhil, or be near completion of a PhD/DPhil in molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry or a related field. You will have previous knowledge and experience of C. elegans culture and possess sufficient specialist knowledge to work within the established research programme. You will have the ability to manage your own academic research and associated activities and have previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations. Evidence of publications in peer reviewed journals is expected. Excellent communication skills including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results is essential. Knowledge of epigenetic gene regulation and library construction for high-throughput sequencing would be advantageous.

This full-time fixed-term post is funded by the EPA Cephalosporin Fund for up to 12 months in the first instance and is based at the Department of Biochemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford.

This position is graded on the University's Grade 7 scale, for which the salary range is £33,309 - £40,927 per annum. The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available. This is unlikely to be more than £37,467 per annum.
