Post-Doc Candidate For Project Cluster ‘Appeals To Moral Responsibility: Preventing Negative Effects Of External Pressures And Enhancing Intrinsic Motivation For Behavioural Change’ (1.0 Fte, Duration 3 Years)

Utrecht University

Post-doc candidate for Project Cluster ‘Appeals to Moral Responsibility:

Preventing negative effects of external pressures and enhancing intrinsic motivation for behavioural change' (1.0 FTE, duration 3 years)

Job description

Utrecht University is currently seeking a post-doctoral researcher to join the Organizational Behaviour research group of Distinguished Professor Naomi Ellemers. The primary focus of this position is to develop effective interventions that can enhance intrinsic motivation for behavioural change in morally charged situations. As researcher you will also be responsible for conducting field studies in various settings and among diverse target groups to evaluate the impact of these interventions.

The ultimate goal of the PhD projects is to uncover the underlying mechanisms that engage individuals' sense of moral responsibility, thereby promoting socially responsible conduct among both citizens and organizations. We believe that by understanding these mechanisms, we can develop more effective strategies for inducing positive behavioral change. For a comprehensive overview of the cluster of PhD projects, please refer to the detailed description available at: https: // www. uu.nl/en/research/organisational- behaviour/vacanciesThe post-doc will play a pivotal role in expanding upon the basic research of the PhD projects. The postdoc will be responsible for developing and evaluating interventions that can effectively bring about behavioural change in various real-world contexts, catering to a diverse range of target populations. These contexts include venues like ARTIS Planetarium, business events, or science festivals.

To achieve this, the post-doctoral researcher will employ a two-step approach.

Firstly, by adapting existing activities and interventions to optimize their intended impact within these specific contexts. This may involve tailoring the interventions to resonate with the unique characteristics and needs of each target population.

Secondly, our psycho-physiology lab will provide the post-doctoral researcher with advanced techniques for monitoring the effects of these interventions in the field.

By leveraging the capabilities of this lab, the researcher will be able to gather valuable data and insights into the psychological responses of individuals participating in these interventions. Overall, the post-doctoral researcher will bridge the gap between theory and practice by refining and implementing interventions, and measuring their impact on site. This comprehensive approach will enable us to deepen our understanding of effective strategies for promoting behavioural change in diverse field contexts and among various target populations

Tasks during the first year are:

Review relevant theory and findings from basic research and include these in an intervention guideline for practitioners;

Develop two versions of an intervention based on this guideline and empirically compare their impact in an applied setting;

Write a scholarly report about this intervention that can be submitted for publication;

Write a blog about this intervention for practitioners.

Your responsibilities would be:

Designing and conducting the research (literature research, developing and programming experiments, data collection, analysing data, reporting results), resulting in international scientific publications;

Presenting results at national and international scientific conferences;

Developing guidelines and tools conveying insights from this research for practitioners;

Active participation in the research group and the SCOOP programme;

Initiating contact and managing research collaborations with external parties;

Taking on other (non-research related) tasks that benefit the research group (e.g., teaching, project coordination, max. 10% per year).

Qualifications

You should have:

(Almost) finished a PhD degree in the domain of social psychology or a related discipline;

Demonstrable interest in the topics associated with the project(s);

A solid training in quantitative experimental research and data analysis, good statistical (software) skills;

Affinity and some experience with cognitive or social neuroscientific research and/or the use of psychophysiological measures is a bonus;

Demonstrable interest in synthesizing theories and research findings from different fields;

Excellent academic writing skills;

Publications in (or papers submitted to) relevant international peer- reviewed journals;

Eagerness to publish international articles and communicate about your research;

Proficiency in both the English and Dutch language (Dutch should be at least B1-level or one should be willing and able to acquire this level in an early stage of the project);

A keen interest in both basic research and the application of psychological insights to practice;

Professional attitude and conduct that includes integrity, pragmatism, and good collaborative and communication skills;

Independent thinking and a hands-on mentality;

Motivation and ability to contribute to the goals of the research group.

Offer

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for one year in an international working environment. After positive evaluation, this can be extended for two further years.
