Postdoctor In Perinatal Neuroscience

Göteborg University

The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical neuroscience, Health and rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology as well as Psychiatry and neurochemistry.

The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology invites applications for a postdoctoral position at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience.

We offer possibilities to:

independently generate and explore new scientific questions within the frame of the research topic Perinatal Neuroscience

present your methods or findings at international conferences

visit national/international collaborating research groups

co-author high-impact journal publications

work in an ethical and respectful work environment

Subject area

Perinatal Neuroscience

Subject area description

Advances in the care of premature babies have meant that more children survive, and this has led to an increase in the number of children who suffer perinatal brain damage, for example intracerebral hemorrhage and white matter injury. However, we still lack knowledge about the etiology of the disease and there is currently no effective treatment for these disease states.

The research project will use well established premature rodent model and transgenic mice as well as materials obtained from human samples biobanks and advanced technologies to identify potential therapeutic targets for the prevention and treatment of perinatal brain injury. The research group has extensive and long-standing national and international collaborations.

Job assignments

The research projects will involve the use of multi-omics approaches, hands-on experimental molecular biological work, writing manuscripts, and presenting at national/international conferences.

The position requires to work independently as well as in collaboration with both national and international colleagues in a stimulating academic environment. There will be opportunities to teach and to supervise PhD students and other students.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher for this position, the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject area, particularly with a medical background and research experience in perinatal brain injury.

Assessment

We seek a highly motivated and ambitious candidate with a specific interest for lab experiments in neuroscience. The ideal candidate must possess a robust background in practical laboratory techniques and animal handling. Proficiency in bioinformatic analysis is advantageous.

Moreover, exceptional oral and, more crucially, written communication skills in English are essential. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to produce coherent scientific manuscripts, with at least one published paper as the lead author. Great emphasis will be placed in personal suitability.

Application procedure

A cover letter describing the applicant's research interests

A complete curriculum vitae, including the date of the dissertation, the title of the dissertation, the names of the supervisors, and a complete list of publications

Contact information (name, e-mail, telephone number) to two personal references

Employment

The employment is limited (temporary) for 2 years, 100% of full-time, and is placed at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date: as soon as possible or as agreed.
