Job Description

Postdoctoral positions in HIV-1 biology and HIV neuropathogenesis

The Volsky lab in the Department of Medicine/Infectious Diseases at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, seeks a Virologist/HIV Specialist to study the interactions between HIV and drugs of abuse in promoting HIV neuropathogenesis and virus- and drug-related behaviors. The studies will be conducted in mice using a model of HIV neurocognitive disease by EcoHIV infection and include participation in the NIDA/NIH National Scorch consortium and related projects. The research will focus in part on the role of microglia in HIV neuropathogenesis/drug abuse and include isolation of live microglia from mouse brain for virological, gene expression, and potentially epigenetic characterization. Projects will involve exposure to state-of-the-art approaches such as the addictive substance self-administration in mice, sn/sc RNaseq, epigenetics, as well as mouse behavioral tests and molecular biology/virology techniques including HIV (EcoHIV) genome reconstruction to identify viral functions required for neuropathogenesis in vivo.

Educational requirements: A PhD, MD, or MD/PhD degree in HIV/Virology, molecular biology, or a similar field.

Additional preferred skills/experience:

-Experience in viral neuropathogenesis

-Interest in substance use disorder (SUD) research

-2-3 years of experience working with rodents, including brain dissection and analysis

-Track record of independence in research projects

-Track record in working within a team and in multi-team environments

-Good communication and interpersonal skills

-Experience with NGS data generation/analysis is a plus.

This is a 3-year position with the possibility of extension or promotion.
