Description

The School of Science, Engineering and Environment (SEE) is home to a diverse, global community of over 4000 undergraduate, postgraduate and research students supported by over 300 colleagues, and a hub of discovery and innovation. It was formed in 2018 from the unification of three smaller Schools to provide opportunities for interdisciplinary working across its broad academic offer, concentrating around the built and natural environments. Drawing on an academic portfolio from Architecture to Zoology, our multidisciplinary approach is designed to shape the next generation of scientists, engineers, urbanists, and climate leaders. The School's strategy to reinforce a strong international record for high-quality, research-led teaching is enabled through a university-level strategy that facilitates the engagement of industrial partners in the design and delivery of our taught programmes. This role resides within the Biology & Wildlife Subject Area of the Human and Natural Science (HANS) Directorate and serves to support and enhance the student experience of authentic, real-word knowledge and practice.

The Biology and Wildlife Team contributed to UoA3 and UoA7 in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 and achieved, respectively, 26 and 23% World Leading (4) research profiles with 79 86% deemed to be Internationally Excellent (3) The Biology & Wildlife team also delivers a range of well- respected programmes at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels which carry accreditation by the Royal Society of Biology. Current undergraduate teaching is centred around Wildlife Conservation, Marine Biology, Zoology and Biological Sciences, with some of our undergraduate programmes having achieved 100% student satisfaction in the National Student Survey in 2022. At MSc level, taught provision includes a degree in Wildlife Conservation.

The School now wishes to appoint a Research Fellow in Zoology and Genomics. This is a dual role which will involve a substantive contribution to teaching in addition to contributing to research. The post is for a fixed term period of three years but there may be the possibility for this to be extended. Applicants should demonstrate their future potential for independent research through collaboration with current staff to strengthen existing research activity in the Directorate. The successful candidate will contribute to the School's research profile through peer-reviewed publications, collaborative generation of research income and research student supervision. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in, but not limited to, the laboratory-based generation and bioinformatic analysis of genetic and genomic datasets. This could include the detection of environmental DNA through metabarcoding and other approaches which are current areas of research activity. Applicants should also be committed to high quality research-led teaching, and will be expected to contribute to several fundamental and specialist modules in the broad areas of zoology and genomics.
