Job description

Applications are invited for a 4-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position funded by UKRI to investigate novel regulators of the post-translational modification (PTM) S-acylation. The successful applicant will join the group of Dr Jennifer Greaves in purpose-built research laboratories within the Research Centre for Sports, Exercise & Life Sciences, at the Institute of Health and Wellbeing, Coventry University.

S-acylation (also called ‘palmitoylation') is a common post-translational modification involving the reversible attachment of fatty-acyl groups to proteins and acts as a molecular switch to regulate protein function spatiotemporally. Disrupted S-acylation is linked to human disease, including cancer, neurological disorders, and diabetes. Metabolic serine hydrolase enzymes are key components of dynamic protein S-acylation, however relatively little is known about their role in S-acylation pathways. This multidisciplinary project will investigate how the metabolic serine hydrolases regulate global dynamic S-acylation pathways and aims to identify new therapeutic targets for the treatment of human diseases.

This is a highly collaborative project involving scientists from the University of Strathclyde, University of Warwick and Diamond Light Source and will employ a broad range of established and developing experimental approaches including mass spectrometry, computational chemistry and structural biology. This multidisciplinary project will provide the researcher with excellent training and developmental opportunities to support future career progression.

Applicants should have, or are expected to attain, a PhD in Cell, Molecular, or Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, Biomolecular Science, or related subjects. Research laboratory experience in mammalian cell culture, and general molecular biology and protein biochemistry techniques is required. Experience of protein lipidation biology, mass spectrometry-based strategies or protein expression and purification would be an advantage.

The Research Centre for Sport, Exercise and Life Sciences (CSELS) is housed within new purpose-built research facilities in the £62M Alison Gingell building situated in Coventry city centre. Research within CSELS focuses on multidisciplinary approaches to increase our mechanistic understanding of life, from molecules and cells to organs and the whole body. CSELS has benefited recently from significant investment including a critical mass of researchers and support personnel and key research equipment (>£2.5M) including High-Performance Computing for molecular modelling and a Nikon Ti2 confocal microscope.

This role provides an opportunity to join one of the UK's most successful and forward-thinking modern universities at a time when its research capacity is rapidly expanding. Coventry, the UK City of Culture 2021, is located in central England and benefits from excellent transport links, with London, Oxford and Birmingham all within easy reach by train in under an hour.
