The Wellcome Trust Medical Research Council Stem Cell Institute draws together outstanding researchers from 29 stem cell laboratories in Cambridge to form a world-leading centre for stem cell biology and medicine. Scientists in the Institute collaborate to generate new knowledge and understanding of the biology of stem cells and provide the foundation for new medical treatments.

The Karadottir lab aims to understand (1) how neurons regulate oligodendrocyte progenitor cell differentiation throughout life in both health and disease; (2) the effect myelin has on neuronal circuits and (3) to what extent myelin changes once it is formed. The lab uses a combination of diverse approaches, including molecular, genetic, cellular, imaging, physiological and behavioural methods in order to achieve a detailed understanding of myelin plasticity.

We are looking for a motivated, and independent research associate with expertise in single-cell electrophysiological (whole cell voltage-clamp) recordings of oligodendrocyte precursor cells, equally skilled in recording from cells in both embryos and old animals, and with extensive expertise on G-protein coupled and glutamate receptor signalling in oligodendrocytes, to join a European Research Council funded research project to uncover to what extent myelin plasticity occurs and the mechanisms underlying it.

We are seeking candidates with a PhD level qualification in the field of neuroscience and experience working with animals (rodents at all ages, from embryo to old age). We are specifically looking for candidates who are collaborative and enjoy working in a team, have effective communication skills and are interested in the Karadottir lab.
