A post-doctoral research fellow position is available at Washington University in St. Louis, an excellent environment for biomedical research, in the laboratory of Dr. Leslie Gewin within the Division of Nephrology. Dr. Gewin’s lab focuses on basic mechanisms of kidney tubular injury and repair with a focus on the proximal tubule. Projects in the laboratory include the following: 1) role of cell cycle in chronic kidney injury and how this impacts changes in metabolism, repair from injury, and fibrosis; 2) fatty acid oxidation and the roles of mitochondria and peroxisomes in fatty acid oxidation in injury; 3) beta-catenin and FoxO3 signaling in injured tubules and novel downstream mediators of their cellular effects.

Dr. Gewin’s lab is funded by the NIH (R01) and Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Merit Award. Dr. Gewin is committed to mentoring investigators towards independence and encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply. The candidate should have a doctoral degree and background in cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, or a similar field. Experience with animals is preferred. A background in basic molecular biology techniques is important, but prior research in kidney injury is not required, and training will be provided. An interest in learning new skills and ability to communicate well with others are essential. The position will provide opportunities to learn new assays in metabolism as well as experience with single cell/nucleus technologies, but prior experience with these is not expected. St. Louis is a very livable city with all the amenities of a major city (professional sports, symphony, great parks) but with a very reasonable cost of living.
