The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The laboratory of Prof. Dr. Claudia Scholl (Division of Applied Functional Genomics) at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg is interested in finding and characterizing specific molecular alterations and associated vulnerabilities in cancer cells that can be exploited for the development of targeted therapies. In particular, our mission is to improve the understanding of sarcomas and other rare cancers, as we often lack insight into the biology of these diseases, ultimately leading to few treatment options for affected patients.

Job description:

The postdoctoral researcher will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists to functionally characterize previously unrecognized recurrent genetic alterations that have been discovered in the MASTER (Molecularly Aided Stratification for Tumor Eradication) Program of DKFZ, the National Center for Tumor Diseases, and the German Cancer Consortium, one of the most comprehensive precision oncology programs worldwide, with which we collaborate very closely. The successful candidate will generate cellular models representing the entities carrying molecular profiles of interest, examine the resulting phenotypes, establish in vivo disease models where appropriate, and analyze the impact of genetic alterations on biological processes. The methods used (in addition to standard molecular biology, cellular, and protein biochemistry methods) include, e.g., CRISPR and other lentiviral gene manipulations, next-generation sequencing, automated microscopy, and mechanism-directed analyses.

Requirements:

We are looking for an early-career scientist who is highly motivated, ambitious, and commited to experimental cancer research. The candidate should be able to work independently and also have excellent teamwork skills. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a related field, and have published previously in international peer-reviewed journals. Expertise in molecular and cellular biology, with specific focus on genome engineering techniques is advantageous. Profound knowledge of cancer biology, strong communication skills, and excellent written and oral command of English are required.
