Postdoctoral Fellow in Legume Proteomics

Dr. Derek Dee’s laboratory (https://www.landfood.ubc.ca/derek-dee/) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) position to use advanced proteomics tools to characterize seed-storage proteins from legumes, focusing on pea proteins initially. The project involves characterising the composition and structure of pea proteins using LC-MS/MS and other biophysical tools, in order to understand how protein structural changes contribute to quality attributes of pea protein used in food. The effects of different varieties, protein extraction and fractionation conditions, and further processing steps will be examined. This project involves a planned collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), subject to approval by the NRC. The NRC researchers will perform complementary functionality testing. Overall, the project seeks to enhance the use of pea proteins in plant-based foods.

The position is located in the Food, Nutrition and Health program in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (Vancouver campus) (www.landfood.ubc.ca). The candidate will work within a dynamic research group with concurrent projects focused on legume protein structure-function relationships, amyloid fibrils, protein folding, and single-molecule biophysics using optical tweezers. Candidates with an interest in applying concepts from basic protein science to better understand food proteins are strongly encouraged to apply.

The anticipated start date is May 1, 2022 (flexible).

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, or similar, with experience in proteomics using LC-MS/MS, protein sample preparation (e.g., extraction, purification, buffer exchange), and characterization of protein structure and stability using various biochemical and biophysical assays (e.g., SDS-PAGE, CD, fluorescence, FTIR, calorimetry, light scattering, NMR, TEM, AFM, etc.). Experience with other approaches, such as bioinformatics and bioconjugate chemistry for labelling proteins would be an asset.

Please note, to be eligible a PDF must commence the appointment within five years of being awarded a PhD degree.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

•prepare protein samples and conduct biochemical and biophysical analysis

•coordinate with the UBC Proteomics Facility to perform LC-MS/MS analysis

•provide project management, and help write interim and final project reports for the funding agency

•train and mentor students and other researchers

•assist with grant proposals

•prepare manuscripts and present results at conferences
