Research Assistant/Associate in Automated Microscopy

Description

A position exists for a postdoctoral Research Assistant/Associate to work on the development of novel high-throughput automated microscopy techniques for nanomaterial characterisation and device development. The role holder will join the Low-Dimensional Electronics Group under the supervision of Dr Jack Alexander-Webber.

The successful individual will join a project that aims to develop new high- throughput automated microscopy, analysis and device integration techniques to generate large multi-technique characterisation datasets of nanomaterials, such as semiconductor nanowires, graphene, two-dimensional semiconductors.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are:

・ Designing, building and optimising a multi-technique microscopy/characterisation system. This could include a combination of brightfield/darkfield microscopy, photoluminescence/Raman spectroscopy, photocurrent mapping etc.

・ Programming hardware control and user interfaces for data capture, large- area substrate mapping, and automation based on real-time microscopy image feature detection.

・ Characterising nanomaterials based on these techniques, generating and analysing multi-technique datasets.

・ Writing and publishing journal papers on experimental findings.

・ Playing an active role in the day-to-day supervision of students involved in the project.

・ Working cooperatively within a team of academics, researchers and postgraduate students at Cambridge, and collaborating with industrial partners and other UK-based and international universities.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

・ A PhD in Materials Science, Electronic Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or Nanotechnology.

・ Track record of authoring high quality academic publications in field of microscopy, semiconductors/materials characterisation, or optical system development.

・ Experience and skills designing, building and optimising optical, material characterisation, or microscopy systems.

・ Interpersonal and leadership skills as required for interdisciplinary collaborative research project.

・ Motivation and enthusiasm for curiosity-driven research.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant:£27,116 - £31,406 Research Associate: £33,309 - £40,927

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 5 months in the first instance, with a possibility of extension subject to available funding.
