 Post-doc Position in Molecular Pharmacology

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, invites applications for a three-year post-doc position in the Molecular Pharmacology group starting September 1, 2008, or as soon as possible.

The Molecular Pharmacology group is currently composed of a professor, two associate professors, 1 post doc, five PhD students and 2 master thesis students. The group performs molecular pharmacology and medicinal chemistry studies of different neurotransmitter receptors and transporters in the central nervous system (CNS). The majority of the research performed by the group is in the form of collaborations with the medicinal chemistry, structural biology and chemical biology groups at the Department. Furthermore, the group has numerous collaborations with other research groups in Denmark and abroad.

The present project is focused on the ligand-gated ion channels mediating the physiological effects of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The post doc will study the signalling of GABA-A receptors and the properties of orthosteric and allosteric ligands acting at them at recombinant receptors expressed in Xenopus oocytes and mammalian cell lines by electrophysiological recordings. In these studies, the molecular basis for the pharmacological properties of interesting ligands, such as subtype selectivity and desensitization kinetics, will also be explored in mutagenesis studies. In another part of the study, the post doc will be a part of a collaborative effort in the lab to implement the technology required to study the signalling of ionotropic receptors in neuronal cultures. Once established, the post doc will apply this technology in studies of native GABA-A receptors in cortical and cerebellar cultures.

We are looking for a dedicated and skilled individual, preferably with a background in molecular biology/pharmacology, who is able to work independently as well as be a part of a collaborative research group. Experience with electrophysiology and/or work with neuronal cultures will be considered strong assets but all interested candidates with a background in molecular biology/pharmacology are encouraged to apply for the position. The post doc position requires some teaching (5-10 % of the total work load) and therefore teaching qualifications will be part of the final assessment of the successful candidate. Candidates may apply before receiving their PhD degree, but the selected candidate must have earned a PhD degree before the start of the appointment.

The position is covered by the terms of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. As an equal opportunity employer, The Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences invites applications from all interested candidates regardless of gender, age, ethnic origin or religion.

For additional information about the project, please contact Associate Professor Anders A. Jensen, phone +45 3533 6491, e-mail: aaj@farma.ku.dk.

Applications should be marked 07-322/MPD-14. Include in five copies: a current curriculum vitae, copies of relevant diplomas, a complete list of publications indicating those articles relevant to the position and copies of same, and a statement of teaching qualifications.

Applications should be sent to:

The deadline for applications is Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 12 noon.
